THE DANCE ON CAMERA INTENSIVE

an educational and university experience

this 3-day in-person intensive brings a collaborative approach in working with student choreographers, dancers and educators.

We look at how a Narrative based piece originally Conceived for the stage can be translated to an on-camera medium.

the goal is to broaden the artists’ choreographic decisions with how it is effected by framing, lighting, on-location options, camera movements, lens choices and editing.

DAY ONE

Re-working for the frame // rehearsal

participant pre-choreographed 1-2 minute pieces are presented to matt and his team. we discuss the original concepts, inspiration and narrative goals of the choreographer and what they want the audience to gain From the Piece.

The topics discussed are:

  • what is a Director of Photography & other crew

  • locations & time of day

  • use of lighting & physical elements

  • camera angles, movements and lens options - what they each bring or Could distract from the choreography.

  • re-working the staging to achieve the new goals for a narrative on-camera performance

DAY TWO

Production

Utilizing professional cinema quality gear provided by Matt and his assistant, We Implement the decisions made on day one and explore in real-time the differences in angle options, use of lighting and discuss how our on-set decisions can effect the edit.

other observing participants can learn from the process as either being part of the crew or watching the filming.

the filming techniques we explore can be applied in all forms of filming - whether it be an iPhone or a larger higher end production. .

DAY THREE

post production // editing

matt and his team will do a rough assembly of the footage from the previous day. We then go into all the choices That can be made within post production. utilizing a large monitor for all to observe the process to get to a final cut of each Piece.

We discuss the following:

  • how to utilize different types of cuts within the edit to enhance the narrative story.
